EHI readers have backed payments for the ‘meaningful use’ of electronic patient records, as part of a ‘roadmap’ for their implementation in NHS trusts in England.
Patients of GP practices in North London will soon start receiving appointment reminders and health information via text messages provided by iPlato patient care messaging. GPs hope the move will reduce unneccessary visits to A&E and improve the take-up of screening and immunisation services. The text messages will be free for patients to receive, but they will be charged at their standard message rate if they respond to appointment reminders.

A new, two-day summer school course has been announced, designed for professional software developers working on e-health applications and integration. HL7 UK, the Centre for Health Informatics, Multi-professional Education University College London, and Yorkshire Centre for Health Informatics have created a partnership to offer the course. The summer school is aimed at professionals working in NHS trusts and healthcare software suppliers on the design, development and integration of health information systems.
