Camden and Islington to upgrade RiO

15 June 2011   Fiona Barr

Camden and Islington NHS Foundation Trust is due to go live with the first of two major upgrades to its RiO system next month.

The mental health trust will be the first NHS organisation in London and the South of England to receive the new functionality that was agreed as part of the renegotiation of BT’s local service provider contract with the Department of Health last year.

The enhanced functionality is due to be delivered to the NHS in two parts, Release One and Release Two, with Release One being introduced from July this year and Release Two going live in June 2013.

Release One functionality will include results reporting, SNOMED coding, inpatient prescribing, bar code reading and centile chart mapping. It will also enable the sharing of information across RiO solutions in the same care setting.

The Release Two functionality will include sharing clinical information with the Spine, which will enable integration between RiO and the NHS Summary Care Record.

It will also include an outpatient and discharge report and summary tool, order communications for pathology and radiology, and child health and care plan enhancements.

Trusts will also have a choice of non mandatory functionality from Release One.

Morfydd Williams, programme director for community and mental health in NHS London, told E-Health Insider that all 25 trusts in the Southern cluster completed the roll-out of RiO Version 5 last month.

This followed its roll-out to 29 community service providers and eight mental health trusts in London last September.

She added: “The next key milestone will be July 2011, when Release One goes live at Camden and Islington NHS Foundation Trust.”

All contracted upgrades, releases and enhancements of RiO are due to be completed across all 37 NHS organisations in London by October 2014.

The RiO programme in London and the South was the winner of the ‘excellence in major healthcare IT deployment’ category at the E-Health Insider Awards 2010 in association with BT.
