Guy's and St Thomas' NHS Foundation Trust in London is planning to spend £213m on IT investments over the next five years, and a significant proportion of that money will go on mobile working.

The trust is developing a 'Hospital in Pocket' programme to replace its existing phones, BlackBerry smartphones, bleeps and pagers with standard devices, linked to an improved infrastructure, and running more sophisticated software to control staff access to systems and services.

Blackpool Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust is thinking along the same lines. It is planning to give staff in its new community provider unit Samsung Galaxy 7 tablets, with remote mobile access to scheduling and patient information.

An increasing number of trusts appear to be picking Samsung devices. One trust IT director told EHI Mobile that while Apple products have cache, clinical staff tend to prefer the size and speed of the Samsung products when they use them in practice.
