Mid Yorks integrates kiosks with PAS

11 August 2010   Sarah Bruce

Mid Yorkshire Hospitals NHS Trust has installed self service kiosks that integrate with its Ascribe patient administration system.

The trust, which has recently opened new sites in Pontefract and Wakefield, wanted to improve the way in which its hospitals were notified of patient arrivals and they way patients were directed to the correct consultation.

James Rawlinson, assistant director IT services and medical records, said: “We looked at a number of ideas on how to improve the experience for the patient and also to look at a cost effective way of arriving patients and improving patient flow.

“Service kiosks are an exciting and very innovative addition to our reception capabilities, and as more people prefer self-service we will have the choice available for the patients themselves to decide.”

The trust chose Intouch with Health to provide the self service kiosks. The company had worked on a similar project with systems integrator Blue Prism at University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Trust to register large numbers of patients, using technology that integrated with Birmingham's PAS.

Rawlinson added: “When we spoke to Blue Prism we found that the technology could not only integrate our PAS with the kiosks, it could literally integrate details in a fraction of the time, and a fraction of the cost of traditional approaches.”

The trust is now using Blue prism for a number of integration projects and is continuing the roll-out of the kiosks across all of its sites.
