Network supports Aneurin Bevan strategy

Surrey-based systems integrator LAN2LAN has won a contract to design, supply and maintain the wireless infrastructure for the Aneurin Bevan Health Board for up to five years.

The health board, which covers a population of more than 600,000 across 60 sites in the Gwent area, will deploy the company’s Trapeze wi-fi solution to provide an infrastructure covering multiple users in multiple locations.

The board decided to tender for a wireless infrastructure as part of its Clinical Futures Programme, which aims to develop a sustainable healthcare system and involves the construction of new hospitals and technology across Gwent.

Andrew Evans, head of telecommunications for Aneurin Bevan Health Board, said: “The LAN2LAN team took the trouble to understand the goals for Clinical Futures and the needs of the organisation and made sure that their solution could deliver what we wanted securely.

“The solution chosen is highly resilient, essential to providing excellent patient care and crucial to life-saving services such as our specialist stroke unit.”

According to the company, the deployment will increase the speed and capacity of the infrastructure and reduce the chance of downtime to less than 1%.

It will also improve access and delivery of wireless Voice over IP, picture archiving and communications systems as well as other systems used at point of care.

Gary Duke, director of LAN2LAN, added: “Another major benefit of wireless technology is cost. By building a wireless infrastructure, Aneurin Bevan Health Board will no longer have to invest in multiple fixed and mobile devices.

"It will have the distinct advantage of being able to route all calls via a landline number, thereby reducing the overall number of expensive mobile billing minutes.”

LAN2LAN has achieved N3 complaince, allowing it to connect remotely to sites in Gwent using the Public Sector Broadband Access infrastructure for Wales, and enabling it to provide remote support services.

Evans added: “The national code of connection does not allow ad hoc connections, so it was essential for LAN2LAN to achieve N3 compliance if they were to meet the demands of our Service Level Agreement. LAN2LAN is one of very few vendors to achieve N3 accreditation.”
