Pennine Care orders Ardentia data warehouse

Pennine Care NHS Foundation Trust, a specialist mental health trust, has ordered a data warehouse system to improve its information management and reporting.

The trust has chosen a mental health reporting system from Ardentia, which will enable data to be brought together from multiple sources, including inpatient and outpatient activity, referrals, review records and caseload data.

Ardentia says the system will provide trust service managers with the information they need to make informed clinical and management decisions.

The main operational source system that will be linked to the data warehouse is a hosted version of iSoft Patient Manager, supplied by local service provider Computer Sciences Corporation as part of the National Programme for IT in the NHS.

Barbara Hoyle, ICT director at the trust, told E-Health Insider: “The solution will allow the integration of mental health data from the trust’s patient administration system to support statutory and internal reporting.”

She added: “In the longer term it offers the opportunity to roll-out to front line managers to assist with the performance management agenda.”

The trust is planning a two month period of parallel running with the existing system from May, followed by a go-live in July.

Hoyle continued: “The trust was confident that Ardentia had a track record for delivering effective systems to NHS organisations, and had particular experience working with mental health.

“In addition Ardentia has been chosen by NHS Connecting for Health as the sole supplier supporting the Secondary Uses Service.”

Pennine Care is also one of four trusts nationally to be involved in defining the basis for Payment by Results in mental healthcare services.

Contract negotiations for the system began in November 2008 and were followed by a requirements definition exercise, which led to the contract being signed last month.

Gary Ferguson, sales manager at Ardentia said: “Pennine Care will bring its own special perspective to our work, in particular in the definition of patient clusters and packages of care. This will be invaluable for defining effective methods of analysis and evaluation as well as preparing for exciting developments in the future.”
