Graphnet supports Trafford diabetes centre

20 November 2008   Fiona Barr

A web-based diabetes system from Graphnet has been installed in a dedicated diabetes centre in Trafford.

The Diabetes Centre at Trafford General Hospital will be the hub for diabetes care in the borough, offering specialist medical and nursing care, nutritional advice, patient education, and retinal screening and podiatry services under one roof.

It employs two consultants, four specialist nurses, and podiatrists, dieticians, other healthcare professionals and support staff and is able to run evening clinics.

The Graphnet system, G-Diabetes, will collect the clinical information required by the team at the centre and allow it to be shared with other, appropriate healthcare professionals, who will be able to view their own patients’ information over an NHS secure network connection.

The centre also plans to use a range of innovative technologies to help patients with diabetes, including text messages to remind patients to take their insulin.

The centre was opened after a successful local fundraising campaign which raised almost £500,000. Diabetes consultant Dr Bill Stephens, who led the fundraising, said: “The opening of a dedicated diabetes centre enables us to provide personalised care tailored to meet individual patients’ needs in modern bright surroundings, and a wider range of clinic times makes it more convenient for patients.”

Trafford Healthcare NHS Trust, which runs the General Hospital, has an existing relationship with Graphnet. It developed an electronic patient record system with the company and booking specialists Ultragenda that collects and shares information across the local health community, and also works alongside an existing iSoft patient administration system.
