Barts brings digi docs into Millennium

4 September 2012   Rebecca Todd

Barts Health NHS Trust has bought the OnBase electronic document management system to give staff access to 500,000 scanned, historical medical records within Cerner Millennium.

The Hyland Software system will be integrated with the trust’s Cerner electronic patient record, which it implemented as part of the National Programme for IT in the NHS.

The trust says the move will streamline clinical access to casenotes, while OnBase’s workflow solution will address a number of other business processes, including referrals management and subject access requests.

A tender document issued in 2010 says the trust wanted an electronic document management system to provide access to patient medical records across all of its sites on demand.

The aim was to reduce the amount of time and money spent managing and storing paper patient records, while streaming clinical workflows to improve productivity.

The tender notice said responses would only be considered from suppliers who could evidence integration with Millennium and with documented experience in a health records environment.

In a statement, Barts Health NHS Trust deputy chief executive Toby Lewis said the solution it had bought would integrate fully with its core applications.

“This will provide our clinicians with up-to-date patient information, which they can access without having to leave Cerner Millennium,” he added.

A Hyland spokesman said integration with electronic patient record systems is one of OnBase’s key differentiators. It has specific integration modules for Cerner Millennium, Epic, and Allscripts, he said.
