Speech recognition solutions in the NHS

An increasing number of NHS trusts and other healthcare organisations have speech recognition solutions on their shopping lists. Speech recognition and digital dictation offer substantial benefits to organisations that are looking to improve their standards of patient care, since they enable greater accuracy to be achieved.

They also offer an assurance of more secure data storage, which is not possible when using a tape based system in which tapes may get lost, damaged or accidentally erased. Additionally, they enable more efficient ways of working, with visible workflows and the means to make document and information bottlenecks and delays a thing of the past.

MediSpeech is powered by Nuance's SpeechMagic software and is a digital dictation workflow platform that can utilise speech recognition. It does not require a separate server.

MediSpeech has been developed specifically for hospitals, and comes with 150 medical vocabularies. Its advantages include scalability and continuous learning so that the client's unique voice is addressed. This means that the 'ums' and 'ahs' can be removed; reducing editing times.

G2 Speech has implemented MediSpeech in more than 75 NHS sites, including NHS Lothian and Northumbria Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust. Both organisations have achieved a significant reduction in document turnaround times, while improving access to information for clinicians and secretarial staff, and reducing errors that might impact on patients.
